McCain’s Commitment to Sustainability and Community Impact in 2025
As 2025 continues to unfold, businesses worldwide are grappling with the ongoing effects of climate change and rising living costs. McCain, a global leader in frozen food manufacturing, recognizes the pivotal role it plays in strengthening food and agriculture systems, especially in a time of unprecedented challenges. Despite the global difficulties, McCain remains steadfast in its commitment to social and environmental responsibility, continuing to make significant progress in its sustainability and community engagement efforts.
Empowering Farmers and Advancing Sustainable Agriculture
One of McCain’s proudest achievements is its focus on working alongside farmers to trial and adopt regenerative agricultural practices. To date, 98% of McCain’s North American farming partners have been onboarded to the company’s Regenerative Agriculture Framework, a guide for farmers to support their progression toward a more regenerative model. Notably, 13% of McCain’s North American farming partners are already engaging in practices that help build on-farm resilience, contributing to a smarter, more sustainable approach to agriculture.
The company’s sustainability strategy extends beyond farm-level improvements. Audrey Leduc, Director North America Planet-Friendly Practices Explains, “Our products are highly dependent on the natural world around us, and as a global business it is our responsibility to help address climate change. We do this by striving to use fewer natural resources and being efficient in our use of energy and water, while reducing our waste.” Since 2017, McCain in North America has achieved a 6.5% absolute reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Additionally, 25% of its electrical energy consumption came from renewable electricity sources.
Creating Healthier Food Choices
Alongside its environmental efforts, McCain is on a journey to deliver Good Food — food that’s simple, responsible, and meets the needs of increasingly health and environment-conscious consumers. The company’s acquisition of the vegetable-forward Strong Roots brand is a significant move toward offering healthier, plant-based food options. “McCain has made impressive strides in reducing sodium content across its product lineup. The McCain® Signature Skin-On 1/2″ Fries in Canada Foodservice now feature a 22% reduction in sodium,” states Stephanie Holodinsky, Senior Director of Global Scientific and Regulatory Affairs “underscoring McCain’s commitment to offering consumers healthier choices without compromising on taste.”
Areas for Continued Focus and Improvement
While McCain celebrates its achievements, the company is also aware of areas that require further attention. The company remains committed to sourcing renewable energy and expanding its own renewable energy sources, a key part of McCain’s energy transition strategy. They are also looking to continue addressing Scope 3 emissions which remains a significant challenge. Progress in this area has been slower than expected, but McCain is actively working to accelerate its efforts through a supplier engagement program aimed at reducing emissions across its entire supply chain.
Another area of focus for McCain is the sourcing of palm oil. In line with its sustainability goals, McCain has reassessed its palm oil strategy, ensuring that it strikes a balance between environmental responsibility and the livelihoods of farming communities.
Looking Ahead
As McCain continues to navigate the challenges of 2025 and beyond, the company remains focused and determined to meet its long-term goals. McCain is committed to delivering tangible, sustainable change through innovation, collaboration, and resilience. While there is more work to be done, McCain’s commitment to addressing climate change, promoting healthier food options, and supporting local communities reflects a strong dedication to making a positive impact on the world.
